A Tribute to a Nollywood Icon: The Final Farewell to Mrs. Nkechi Nweje a.k.a Nwanyi Onitsha








On Friday, 23rd May 2025, the city of Onitsha in Anambra State stood still as the Nigerian film industry came together to bid farewell to one of its most iconic figures — Mrs. Nkechi Nweje, fondly known as Nwanyi Onitsha. After a long battle with a protracted illness, the veteran actress took her final bow, leaving behind a legacy that will forever echo in the halls of Nollywood history.



Nkechi Nweje’s rise to stardom was nothing short of remarkable. Her breakthrough came with the film that would go on to define her brand and identity in the industry — "Nwanyi Onitsha" — a role that showcased her exceptional talent and resonated deeply with audiences across Nigeria and beyond. From that moment, she became a household name, capturing hearts with her powerful performances, compelling expressions, and her deep-rooted cultural portrayals.

Over the course of her illustrious career, Mrs. Nweje featured in over 250 Nollywood films, working alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. Her commitment to storytelling and cultural representation positioned her as one of the most respected and celebrated actresses in Nigerian cinema. Her presence on screen was magnetic — a combination of charisma, depth, and authenticity that earned her numerous awards and accolades.





























The funeral ceremony was more than a farewell — it was a celebration of life, talent, and impact. Onitsha became the epicenter of what many described as a “Nollywood Hall of Fame” gathering, as film practitioners, dignitaries, and fans from across the country converged to honor a legend.

In attendance was a constellation of Nollywood stars and stakeholders, including:

  • Chief Ifeanyi Azodo — a renowned Nollywood tripartite force as producer, director, and actor, and the current President of the Association of Movie Practitioners (AMPRAC).
  • Mrs. Ebele Okaro, a close colleague of the deceased, who gave an emotional tribute highlighting Nkechi's dedication and humility.
  • His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, who paid his respects and described Mrs. Nweje as “a cultural icon who represented the Igbo spirit with pride and grace.”
  • Other Nollywood figures such as Prince Emeka Ani, Evan Okoro, Only Michael, Harry B, Sunny Michaels, and Apostle Nwankwo Ude, Rt.Hon.Sunday Olisemeka only celebrity law maker , chief imo , Chief ofili ugbo, Mrs.Rita edochie, Mary IGWE  were also present, lending their voices and presence to what turned into an unforgettable memorial.

Friends, family, and colleagues took turns to pay tributes, share memories, and celebrate a life that had touched so many both on and off-screen. The atmosphere was filled with both sorrow and reverence — sorrow for the loss of a rare gem, and reverence for the legacy she left behind.

Mrs. Nkechi Nweje's contributions to Nollywood and Nigerian culture will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and actors. She was more than just an actress — she was a bridge between tradition and modern storytelling, a mentor to many, and a beacon of excellence in African cinema.

As her body was laid to rest in her hometown of Onitsha, her spirit lives on in the films she made, the lives she touched, and the stories she helped bring to life.

Rest well, Nwanyi Onitsha. Your light will never fade.
